I totally get why that feels unsatisfying! The current implementation demands the boxes to be stacked neatly in roughly a straight line, which could have been elaborated on further.

ohhhh ok ok, well, the game never explains that really, it just tells you that the nunmbers need to be in order on top of each other, is not that intuitive, but if you communicate the straight line rule somehow, it wo uld make sense and make for more cool puzzles.
Yes! That was some short-sightedness on our part. Our goal was for the player to explore and discover some of the more niche rules on their own. Levels like this one were an attempt to make the player stumble onto them naturally.
You are certainly right that we could have communicated this more effectively.
